Apple will release a desktop with 4k resolution this fall, claims the usually reliable Apple fan site 9to5Mac. A 12″ laptop with ‘Retina’ screen is also expected to arrive; so far, laptops with such screens are available in 13″ and 15″ variants.

The desktop, which the 9to5Mac isn’t clear about whether it’s an iMac or separate monitor, will get a 4k resolution to better showcase OS X Yosemite’s thin fonts and new graphics, and presumably allow users to view 4k video. footage 1:1 viewable on screen: Mac software would also get an update to better handle 4k footage. The highest resolution Apple currently uses is 2880×1800 pixels on the 15″ variant of the Macbook Pro Retina.

In addition, Apple is said to be working on a 12″ laptop with a ‘retina’ screen, but in which line it will fall is unknown; it could be a smaller Macbook Pro or a newer variant of the Macbook Air. Yosemite should also be released in October, and Yosemite should be released by the end of October, starting Thursday for a million Mac users to get started with a test version of Apple’s new desktop operating system.
