Rumor: Apple is considering using homemade antenna for 5G iPhone
According to rumors, Apple would consider providing the upcoming iPhone with 5G support with a homemade antenna. That decision may be made because a Qualcomm model would be too thick for the iPhone housing.
Apple itself has not confirmed the rumors, but Fast Company claims to have a reliable source that has explained the plans. For the upcoming iPhone with 5G support, Apple would have its own design for the antenna, with the advantage that it is thinner than the model that Qualcomm offers with its X55 modem. Incidentally, Qualcomm itself says that the QTM 525 antenna can be used in smartphone housings that are less than 8 mm thick.
Whether a 5g iPhone will actually appear with an Apple-designed antenna remains to be seen. The company is working out several options at the same time, and it is also possible that the Qualcomm antenna will be chosen, according to Fast Company. However, Apple would rather go for its own production, to become less dependent on Qualcomm; the two companies have fought lawsuits in the past.
There have been rumors for years about the release of an iPhone with 5G. Competing smartphone makers have already released smartphones with 5G support in recent times, and the first 5G networks have also been made available by telecom providers.
