Rumor: Apple cuts iPhone X production from 40 million to 20 million units
According to a new rumor, Apple has cut production of the iPhone X to 20 million units in the first quarter of this year. When it was released in November, the company would have expected to produce 40 million copies.
The rumor comes from the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei, which does not explicitly state where the information comes from. Apple would have informed its suppliers of the halving. The newspaper writes that the decision was prompted by lower sales figures than expected. That would apply to markets such as Europe, China and the US. Production numbers for other devices, such as the iPhone 7, 8 and 8 Plus, would have remained unchanged.
Apple released the iPhone X in November with a starting price of 1,159 euros. The smartphone differs from previous devices by its OLED screen, which according to Nikkei contributes to the high price of the phone. For example, a feature missing from other iPhones is unlocking using Face ID.
The decision to cut production in half would also affect suppliers who have supplied parts to Apple for the iPhone X. Nikkei further reports that Apple is considering cutting production of models with an OLED screen for later this year in favor of devices with an LCD. .
