Rumor: Apple comes with Apple Music subscription for streaming lossless music

Apple is rumored to be launching a new Apple Music subscription “in the coming weeks,” which will allow users to stream lossless music. The iOS 14.6 beta also includes references to support for lossless streaming through the service.

This week, Hits Double Daily stated that Apple would release a “high fidelity” subscription in the coming weeks, along with the third-generation AirPods. The website is based on sources from the music sector. Apple would charge a monthly fee of ten dollars for the lossless subscription. That’s as much as a regular Apple Music subscription; Apple will probably make lossless streaming available to all users of its music streaming service.

This weekend, 9to5Mac also discovered references to an Apple Music HiFi subscription in the code of the first iOS 14.6 beta, although the references are said to have been removed from iOS 14.6 beta 2. The first build would include the terms “Dolby Atmos”, Include Dolby Audio and ‘Lossless’. This suggests that the company is indeed planning to offer lossless music through Apple Music, and that this feature may be added to iOS 14.6.

The iOS 14.6 update is also expected to add support for paid subscriptions in the Podcasts app, writes 9to5Mac. That feature will be available in May, according to Apple. Presumably, iOS 14.6 will be released in the coming weeks, which corresponds to the message from Hits Double Daily.

Apple Music would not be the first service to offer lossless streaming of music. Competitors Tidal and Amazon already offer hi-fi subscriptions, although these companies charge a higher monthly rate. Spotify already announced earlier this year that it was working on a HiFi subscription, although the company did not mention a concrete release date.
