Apple appears to have no plans to bring Touch ID fingerprint scanner back to iPhones. The equipment needed to create the fingerprint scanners has all been turned off except for production of the 2022 third-generation iPhone SE.

An anonymous source says that no longer using the equipment indicates that Apple has no plans to use Touch ID in new iPhones. That source is according to MacRumors an account that has shared information about Apple and ICs in the past.

Apple used Touch ID fingerprint scanners since the iPhone 5s in 2013 until the iPhone 8 series in 2017. After that, only the SE models got fingerprint scanners. There have been rumors for years about a return of Touch ID. Apple is said to have tested, among other things, a fingerprint scanner behind the screen, as is found in many Android phones.

There are Touch ID scanners under the screen or in the Power buttons of various iPad models. MacBooks also often have fingerprint scanners. iPhones and more expensive iPad Pro models have been using facial recognition via Face ID for years.
