According to telecom insider Evan Blass, Google plans to release a first developer version of Android 9.0, currently codenamed ‘P’, in the middle of this month. Google will probably release multiple developer versions before the software is final.

Blass announced this via a message on Twitterwithout further explanation. However, Blass is known to have many contacts within the telecom world, and he is rarely wrong when it comes to information about unannounced products.

In recent years, Google has more often released developer versions of its new mobile operating system in March, so any release shouldn’t come as a surprise. There have also been several rumors about Android 9.0, including that applications would no longer be able to use the camera and microphone in the background.

The final version of Android 9.0 may be released during Google’s own I/O developer conference. It will be held from May 8, and a hint was already found in the invitation to the new Android version. Furthermore, it is still unknown what name this version 9.0 of Android will get, but Pie and Pineapple have been around for some time as possible candidates.
