Android L, the successor to Android 4.4, may be given the name Licorice. Previously, the code name was called Lollipop. Android L will probably be officially announced on Wednesday at the presentation of the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

The hints for the name Licorice, ‘drop’ in English, have been given in postings on Google+ by Giovanni Calabrese. He is responsible for placing the Android statues at Google headquarters. Calabrese indicates, among other things, that he would have a lot of liquorice with him and that he would be present on the Google campus all week. Earlier it was assumed in the media that the successor to Android 4.4 Kitkat would be called Lollipop. Android versions are traditionally given names by Google that are related to treats.

After the release of two preview versions, Android L will probably be officially announced on Wednesday with the introduction of the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. The new Android version supports, among other things, the 64-bit architecture of modern socs. The ART runtime compiler is also present as a successor to Dalvik, while Google also introduces a new design under the heading Material Design.
