Rumor: AMD will soon come with an economical video card based on Tonga GPU
AMD plans to release a video card based on a new energy-efficient GPU codenamed Tonga within three months. At least that’s what the Videocardz site claims. The card will probably have to compete with Nvidia’s GTX 750 and 750 Ti.
Tonga is not a high-end processor but a GPU for mainstream cards with 2GB of memory. When changing the architecture, AMD has focused on significantly reducing consumption, claims Videocardz, which more often releases information about video cards correctly early. The name of the card is still unknown, but the site lists R9 275X as a logical designation.
It is unclear what changes AMD has made, but it does mention functionality called PowerTune Boost. GCN functionalities such as Mantle, TrueAudio and possibly XDMA CrossFire would also be present. The GPU would in any case not yet be produced at 20nm and also for High-Bandwidth-Memory, which were previously rumored, there is no support yet.
