Rumor: AMD is working on Radeon Super Resolution upscaling for ‘almost all games’
AMD is rumored to be working on a Radeon Super Resolution technology for upscaling. This would be based on current FSR technology, but function at the driver level and therefore work in ‘almost all games’.
According to VideoCardz sources, Radeon Super Resolution is based on version 1.0 of FidelityFX Super Resolution. That technique renders games at a lower resolution and then applies upscaling, which should yield a higher frame rate compared to rendering at native resolution. However, FSR must be implemented per game.
Radeon Super Resolution would differ in that last area. VideoCardz reports that this alleged technique works via the AMD drivers. Therefore, developers do not need to specifically add support for the upscaling technique to their game. Radeon Super Resolution would work that way in ‘almost’ all games.
An anonymous source tells VideoCardz that AMD Radeon Super Resolution will be released in January. The technique should work on AMD Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 video cards. VideoCardz indicates that there is currently no information available about support for older GPUs or games in a borderless fullscreen mode, but that this may be added at a later time. AMD is expected to share more details about RSR around the CES technology fair. The company will hold a presentation on January 4.
