Amazon is reportedly working on its own operating system for smart TVs, displays and other devices. According to journalist Janko Roettgers, the project is internally called Vega and some partners have reportedly been told by the company that the switch will take place soon.

The first Fire TV devices with Amazon’s own operating system may hit the market sometime next year. writes Roettgers based on different stakeholders and possible vacancies for the development of such software. Vega is reportedly based on Linux and app developers are recommended to use the React Native framework for development. The operating system is intended for a variety of devices, including Fire TV sticks, televisions, Echo Show displays and tablets, the sources said.

For the time being, Amazon uses its own variant of Android for the relevant devices under the name Fire OS. The latest version of this operating system is based on Android 11, while Google equivalents are based on up to Android 12. According to Roettgers, Amazon wants to avoid lagging years behind on software updates with its own operating system.
