Rumor: Amazon is working on its own smartphone
Amazon plans to introduce its own smartphone. It is now working with Foxconn for that, at least according to Bloomberg. Amazon would like to compete with Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android with its own smartphone.
Bloomberg claims to have been informed of the plans by two unnamed sources. According to one of them, Amazon is currently working with Foxconn, which is also a supplier to Apple.
Other sources reportedly told Bloomberg that Amazon is currently trying to obtain patents in the wireless technology so that it can defend itself against patent claims.
Developing its own smartphone would be a logical move for Amazon, which already markets its own hardware in the form of tablets and e-readers. Less likely is Bloomberg’s claim that Amazon would like to compete not only with Google, but also with Apple. Until now, Amazon has mainly focused on cheap hardware intended to promote purchases of, for example, TV series, films and e-books.
