Rumor: 5.5″ iPhone comes months after 4.7″ version due to screen production problems
Apple suppliers are experiencing problems with the production of the 5.5-inch display for the upcoming largest iPhone, so the release of that device may come months after that of the 4.7-inch model. That writes Reuters news agency.
Screen manufacturers are not successful in getting the in-cell technology for the screen to work on the 5.5″ screen of the largest iPhone, Reuters claims based on anonymous sources. In-cell is the technology to touch the touch-sensitive layer. on the LCD itself, which can make the screen thinner as a whole.Apple is considering working with a more conventional screen technology if the production of in-cell panels didn’t work.
It’s not clear why manufacturers would have problems producing the screens for the largest iPhone; for example, according to rumors, the 5.5″ screen will not have a higher pixel density than the current model. It is possible that Apple will have the screens made by other manufacturers, who have more trouble with Apple’s high requirements.
Japanese supplier Japan Display would be the first to deliver screens for the 4.7″ iPhone, starting in May. That makes a release in September, as the Japanese newspaper Nikkei previously reported, likely. When the 5.5″ version would go Reuters does not mention, but it would be a ‘several months’ delay.
Rumors of larger iPhones have been circulating for months. Current iPhones have a screen diagonal of 4″, while many of Apple’s competitors now offer smartphones with larger screens.
