Ron Gilbert is going to make a new Monkey Island game after all
Devolver Digital announces a new Monkey Island game: Return to Monkey Island. Although the publisher is not yet showing much of the game, the company does announce that game developer Ron Gilbert will be working on Monkey Island again after years of absence from the franchise.
Return to Monkey Island will be released this year if it’s up to publisher Devolver Digital. It will be the sixth installment in the Monkey Island series, which began in 1990 with The Secret of Monkey Island. The game was created by three developers: Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. The last Monkey Island game, Tales of Monkey Island, was released in 2009. This game was no longer released under the LucasArts banner. Telltale Games took care of this title.
It is striking that Ron Gilbert is working on this new part again, because he stopped working on the Monkey Island games after the second part. On April 1, 2022, he posted on his personal blog an announcement that he would return to work on a Monkey Island game, with the comment that it was a joke. Now it turns out that he is actually working on a new game. Dave Grossman is also working on the game.
Devolver Digital doesn’t release a lot of details about what we can expect from the game. The trailer only shows a short animation that may give away something about the graphical style of the game. In addition, the studio will announce who will collaborate on the title.
