RomUniverse must permanently destroy all illegal copies of Nintendo games
A US judge is demanding that the owner of RomUniverse, a website where people could illegally download Nintendo games, permanently destroy all of his “unauthorized copies” of such games.
The owner of the RomUniverse website, which has already been taken offline, must destroy all illegal copies of Nintendo’s intellectual property, including games, books, movies and music, by August 17th. By August 20, the romsite owner must make a statement that he ‘meets these conditions’, under penalty of perjury. This is evident from lawsuit documents that TorrentFreak has obtained.
Nintendo first sued RomUniverse in 2019 and the Japanese gaming giant won that lawsuit in May this year, Ars Technica writes. Nintendo was awarded $2.1 million in damages, which would be paid by the owner of RomUniverse in installments, with a monthly fee of $50.
At the end of June, Nintendo went back to court because the RomUniverse owner did not make his first payments of $50, TorrentFreak also reports. In addition, Nintendo filed a permanent injunction on the website with the court, for fear that the owner would put RomUniverse back online. Such an injunction is a court order that a person takes certain actions or refrains from certain activities. After this request, the judge decided to grant the injunction, and that the romsite owner must destroy all of his illegal copies of Nintendo property.
