Rockstar will no longer release “major updates” for Red Dead Online

Rockstar says it will no longer release major updates for Red Dead Online. The company says it has shifted development time to the new GTA game in recent years, reducing support for Red Dead Redemption II’s multiplayer.

The developer still promises release special events around certain seasons “and improve the experience.” In addition, this year the company wants to improve the existing game modes and add new Telegram missions. But players should no longer expect themed content of a certain size, says Rockstar.

This means that the game is unlikely to get any new game modes or other major improvements. Red Dead Online, the multiplayer mode of Red Dead Redemption II, was released in November 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A year later, the game became available for PC and Stadia. The last major expansion for Read Dead Online appeared last year.

That Rockstar is ceasing development of the online mode is somewhat striking; Grand Theft Auto Online is still receiving major improvements and was released in 2013. Rockstar also says it will not stop developing GTA V’s multiplayer, although it is obvious that the number of major updates will also decrease as the release of the next GTA game is getting closer. Red Dead Online players have long complained about the relatively low number of updates the game has received compared to GTA Online.

Rockstar confirmed in February that it was working on a new GTA game. Further details have not been disclosed about this.
