Rockstar has pulled Red Dead Redemption 2’s online multiplayer mode from beta and gave Red Dead Online a major update. The online game will receive more updates in the coming weeks and months.

Red Dead Online has been in beta since November last year, but that will change with a major update on Tuesday. Rockstar reports that this is just the beginning and that the developer will be making numerous improvements in the coming period, from the core of the game to additions to characters and environments. Red Dead Online is free for owners of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Players can choose from offensive and defensive playstyles in the game, and are given many opportunities to shape and develop their character for extended periods of time. The latter is done with Ability Cards, which players can use to expand their powers. They can also choose emotes and running styles, and buy weapons and clothes. From the summer onwards, they can also take on a certain role, such as bounty hunter, merchant or collector, each with their own clothing styles, weapons and other attributes.

In the game, in an open world in the Wild West, players can hunt, fish, fight, play poker and, for example, join a posse along with up to six other players. The online game features several competitive modes and Free Roam events, which can be played in combination. For example, A Land of Opportunities, a two- to four-player co-op mission in which the player must help widow Jessica LeClerk and her right-hand man Horley avenge her husband’s killers. Honor plays a big part in this storyline. Additional missions and in-game choices lead to different outcomes.

Red Dead Online also includes several Free Roam missions, where players can choose missions and challenges based on random encounters in the online world. They can play these missions individually or in groups as a gang. There are challenges such as who can wear the Golden Armor the longest, who can occupy a certain spot the longest and which posse can escort a horse to a location first. There are also hunting and fishing missions.

On June 4, the expansion will follow, including the Railroad Baron mission to maintain a position on a moving train for ten minutes. On June 11, the addition of the Sport of Kings Showdown mode and new clothing options will follow. The three Posse Versus missions are the Biggest Fish Contest, the Bird Shooting Contest and the Herb Picking Contest. Players can play poker in five locations, with up to six other players per table. Among the Showdown Series of combat missions is Gun Rush, a battle royale battle of up to 32 players that can be played as a team or free for all. There are also Showdown battles for as many kills as possible or to defend pieces of land.

The missions and challenges allow players to earn cash, gold and XP. Red Dead Online is an opportunity for Rockstar to realize additional revenue with microtransactions. The developer announced last week that 24 million copies of Red Dead Redemption 2 have been sold, a million more than in November last year, which means sales are leveling off and Rockstar will focus on the online variant.
