Rocket League players on macOS and Linux can request money back via Steam

Players who played Rocket League on macOS or Linux can get their money back for the game. Developer Psyonix gives players tips on how to do that and explains on Reddit why the company stopped supporting those platforms.

Users of the robot soccer game can claim back the money they paid for the game via Steam. The company is collaborating with Valve for this. Normally, Steam players can only get their money back within two weeks of purchase, or within two hours of starting a game. However, Rocket League players now have that permanently if they played on macOS or Linux. The developer says in a post on Reddit that players can request a refund by including the specific text “Please refund my Mac/Linux version of Rocket League, Psyonix will be discontinuing support” in the app. However, many players on Reddit note that that process is not working properly and that Steam automatically ignores the request. In that case, Psyonix recommends that Valve request a refund via the ticket system. Psyonix does not say anything about a refund of the amount of purchased in-game purchases.

The Rocket League developer withdrew support for Linux and macOS last week. The company now provides a longer explanation for this. The OpenGL renderers on macOS and Linux support are based on DirectX 9, while Psyonix wants to go to DirectX 11. The company says it should therefore use a new renderer, such as Vulkan or OpenGL4 on Linux, or Metal on macOS. “The number of active players on macOS and Linux is less than 0.3 percent of our total player count,” the company writes. “Therefore, we cannot justify providing native clients for those platforms.” The developer also points out work-arounds, such as Bootcamp or Wine, that allow players to continue playing.
