Rockchip shows prototype 3D media player
The Chinese chip maker Rockchip has shown a prototype of a 3D media player. As with the Nintendo 3DS, 3D content can be viewed without 3D glasses. The 3d-pmp is expected to be officially introduced at IFA.
Rockchip’s prototype has been given the name Supernova X1 and the Chinese branch of Engadget has the first images of the 3D media player shown. The media player has a screen of unknown size and resolution, but the aspect ratio is 16:9 just like the 3D screen of the Nintendo 3DS. As with the Nintendo handheld, it is possible to switch between 2D and 3D displays, and the LCD will likely use parallax barrier technology to direct the correct image lines to the left and right eyes.
Nothing is officially known about the chipset used, but it is expected that it concerns the recently released Rockchip RK2816. Rockchip has this chip especially for PMPs developed. The chip would be based on an ARM9 core, which runs at 600MHz. Furthermore, the chip would have the ability to play 720p video, and support Android and MP4 playback. The Supernova X1 prototype also has a microSD slot and a USB connection.
The Chinese company Techlast has already announced with two media players based on the Rockchip RK2816. The Techlast C520I and C430I have a 5″ and a 4.3″ screen respectively, but are not known to support 3D.
