Ricoh releases 360-degree camera Theta SC2 in December for 299 euros
Ricoh has announced the successor to the Theta SC, the Theta SC2. This 360-degree camera gets an improved camera sensor with 12 megapixels, which makes filming in 4k possible. The camera also gets new shooting modes and a small OLED screen.
According to Ricoh, the new entry-level model has an improved camera sensor and image processor, making it possible to film 4k images at 30fps for up to three minutes. The maximum resolution of its predecessor was 1920×1080 pixels, although the maximum recording time with the SC was two minutes longer. The resolution of both cameras is the same at 12 megapixels. The storage capacity is larger with the SC2, from 8GB to 14GB. That equates to about 3000 jpeg photos or about 32 minutes of 4k footage. The SC2 has image stabilization, although Ricoh does not report whether this is optical or software.
The format of the SC2 is exactly the same as its predecessor at 45.2×130.6×22.9 mm and the weight is 2 grams heavier than the first SC at 104 grams. On the outside is a button for the self-timer and a 0.5″ OLED screen that shows the settings and battery capacity. The Theta SC2 has support for bluetooth and can send files faster via WiFi.
The 360-degree camera comes with multiple new shooting modes, including Face and Night View. In Face mode, the camera recognizes human faces and applies a smoothing effect to the skin. Night View mode provides noise reduction when shooting in low light. Lens-by-Lens Exposure lets the Theta SC2 determine the exposure for each individual lens, for situations where the amount of exposure can vary greatly. Ricoh mentions, for example, situations such as recordings in a car or on a stage.
The Ricoh Theta SC2 will be available in December for 299 euros. The available colors are pink, blue, beige and white.
