Rezence wireless charging standard extended to tablets and laptops
The Alliance for Wireless Power has expanded its Rezence wireless charging standard to include a 50W specification. This expands the number of products that Rezence could support, including tablets, laptops and other electronics.
Rezence is the name for the magnetic resonance standard previously known as WiPower. It is the major competitor for the Qi standard and companies such as Qualcomm, Samsung, LG and HTC have been supporting Rezence for quite some time now. Meanwhile, the number of support companies has grown to more than a hundred and computer manufacturers such as Dell, Fujitsu, Hon Hai aka Foxconn, Lenovo, Logitech and Panasonic have also joined.
Wireless charging systems based on Rezence operate with magnetic resonance at 6.78MHz and can charge various devices with different energy needs on the same surface. The Alliance for Wireless Power expects to publish the update to the specification with 50W support by the end of this year so that manufacturers can start using it for product integration. The certification program must also be ready by then. The first laptops and tablets with Rezence support and the first chargers are expected to hit the market in 2015.
