Revision PS4 has modified heatsink

Sony has launched a Playstation 4 with a new type number that has been changed in a few points. Among other things, the weight has been reduced by 50 grams, the energy supply has been adjusted and there is a modified heatsink.

The current generation of PS4s have the model number CUH-1100, where the original model had the designation CUH-1000. The Japanese site Pocketnews has extensively compared both variants.

The heatsink has been modified in the new version. It is now a cooling block with aluminum fins that all have the same size. The cooling block of the previous model consisted of two parts, one part had slightly smaller fins. The weight of the console has also been reduced by fifty grams from 2.75 kilograms to 2.7 kilograms.

The motherboard has been given the type number SAB-001 instead of SAA-001 and the difference seems to be mainly related to the power supply. The CUH-1100 has a single-phase power supply for the CPU and a three-phase power supply for the GPU, while the CUH-1000 has a two-phase power supply for the CPU and four-phase power supply for the GPU.

The AMD apu has also received a slightly changed type designation, from CXD90026G to CXD90026AG, but the chips otherwise appear to be identical and the same goes for the Renesas R32C/118 system controller. The Samsung RAM that supports the sub-processor has also been replaced: the PS4 no longer uses the 4B2G1646E-BCK0 package, but the K4B2G1646Q-BCMA. This means that the processor makes the switch from DDR3-1600 memory to more economical and faster DDR3L-1833 memory. The relevant sub-processor is the Marvell CXD90025G-asic, which provides support for network tasks and data transport of the Blu-ray drive and HDD.

It is striking that the 8-bit MCU from STMicroelectronics has disappeared from the motherboard, but this was also part of the electronics of the Blu-ray drive and was therefore possibly redundant. The power supply has been changed from model ADP-240AR to ADP-240CR and that adjustment is accompanied by a reduction in weight of 24 grams and a slightly different output.
