Revenue from Microsoft Surface products continues to grow
Microsoft’s revenue and profit increased in the quarter compared to last year. This is partly due to the good sales of Surface devices and revenue from gaming. Revenue from Azure cloud services also continues to grow strongly.
Surface device sales rose 21 percent in the first three months of this year to more than $1.3 billion, Microsoft’s quarterly figures show. Gaming revenue rose 5 percent to $2.4 billion, mainly due to rising Xbox service revenues. The turnover from this increased by 12 percent compared to the same period last year. There were 63 million monthly active Xbox Live users in the quarter, up 4 million from a year ago.
Microsoft’s Azure business continues to be the largest growth market, with sales up 73 percent. Windows and Office products also performed well. There are now 180 million monthly active Office 365 business users and 34.2 million consumers have an Office 365 subscription. Speaking with investors, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Outlook for iOS and Android has more than 100 million users.
Total revenue for the quarter was $30.6 billion, an increase of 14 percent. Net profit came in at $8.8 billion, 19 percent more than in the same quarter last year.
