Reuters: Release of Windows laptops with Qualcomm Socs is at risk of lawsuit
The release of Windows laptops with Qualcomm SoCs under the Microsoft Copilot+ brand is a risk due to the ongoing lawsuit from Qualcomm and chip architecture maker Arm. Arm wants to see more money from Qualcomm for the Socs.
Qualcomm created the Snapdragon X Socs based on licenses from Nuvia, a company acquired by Qualcomm. That is not possible, Arm claimed several years ago. Arm has therefore filed suit against Qualcomm and the case has not yet been served. If Arm is right, the laptops may have to be taken off the shelves or Qualcomm may have to pay more to the maker of the chip architecture.
Reuters news agency heard at the Computex that manufacturers are talking about it and analysts seem to estimate it as a real risk. The case would start in December in the US state of Delaware. The laptops with Qualcomm Socs will be released from next week.
