Embracer is ‘considering options’ for Borderlands maker Gearbox Entertainment, including a sale. Three insiders reported this to the Reuters news agency. Since 2021, Gearbox has been part of Embracer Group, the largest gaming company in Europe.

According to anonymous Reuters sources Embracer is considering selling Gearbox after ‘third parties’ expressed interest in a takeover. It is still unknown who those parties are. According to the news agency, Embracer is working with Goldman Sachs and Aream to explore the possibilities for such a sale. The insiders state that the plans are not final and that there may not be a deal.

Gearbox Entertainment is an American game studio best known for the Borderlands franchise. The studio was acquired in 2021 by Swedish Embracer, which also owns several other major studios. Embracer has been cutting costs for some time and recently closed Volition, the studio behind the Saints Row and Red Faction franchises. The former Square Enix Montréal was also closed by Embracer earlier this year, shortly after the company acquired that studio.

The information from Reuters has not yet been officially confirmed. Embracer and Goldman Sachs declined to comment to Reuters. Aream did not respond to questions from that news agency.
