Respawn Entertainment Releases Free Battle Royale Game Apex Legends
Respawn Entertainment, the EA studio that is responsible for the Titanfall games, among other things, has released the game Apex Legends. This is a battle royale shooter that can be considered a Titanfall spinoff, with no titans. Titanfall 3 is currently not in development.
Apex Legends visually resembles Overwatch and Fortnite and is set in the Titanfall universe. Unlike the Titanfall games, exosuits and the iconic large, controllable titans are absent. In the new game, players can take on the role of various characters that have their own specific characteristics. There are currently eight different ‘legends’ playable.
Broadly speaking, the game can be regarded as a classic battle royale shooter. Apex Legends revolves around teams of three players, with the team members jumping out of an airplane as usual in search of weapons and equipment. The ‘jump master’ is leading in this; when he jumps out of the plane, the rest immediately follow. Up to sixty players can participate in rounds and the playing field gradually shrinks.
The game is available for Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and is free to play. Eurogamer reports that Respawn producer Drew McCoy said his studio would also like to release the game for mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch, but he couldn’t say anything about that. Crossplay isn’t available right now, but McCoy says Respawn wants to make it possible to play with players on other platforms. However, Apex Legends will never support syncing progression or purchases across multiple platforms.
The revenue model of Apex Legends is similar to that of Fortnite, in the sense that a battle pass is available and players can equip their characters with all kinds of cosmetic items and skins. Loot boxes are also available. Apex Legends only seems to use a first-person perspective.
McCoy was also open about the fact that Titanfall 3 is not in development. Back in December last year, it looked like this was the case, but it now turns out that this was Apex Legends. Whether Titanfall 3 will ever be made is unknown. Respawn is also working on Jedi: Fallen Order.
