Capcom has released a free new mode for the Resident Evil 4 remake. This is the old Mercenaries mode. In addition, a DLC has been released that allows paid upgrades of weapons and technical improvements have been made.

The new mode called The Mercenaries is a time-based mode where players must defeat hordes of enemies to achieve a high score. In the beginning, only certain weapons can be used, so it is important to learn in which situations which weapons have the most effect. Initially, only the Village map will be available, but players will be able to unlock more areas and content over time.

The Mercenaries mode is known from the original Resident Evil 4 from 2005 and was not part of the remake until now. According to Capcom, The Mercenaries is broadly similar to the mode from the original. Players still have to fight their way through many enemies and killing opponents not only increases the score, but also the remaining time on the clock. In the version of the remake, a new feature called the Mayhem mode is also available that temporarily gives players strength.

Furthermore, Capcom more than ten paid DLCs released in the form of weapon upgrade tickets. These can be handed in to the Merchant, after which players will gain access to an exclusive weapon upgrade. Each weapon in the game has an exclusive upgrade that significantly boosts functionality. These tickets give players direct access to the upgrades; it is then no longer necessary to maximize all upgrades first. These tickets make the in-game upgrade free, while otherwise it costs the necessary pesetas. Purchasing these DLCs is not necessary to complete the game; they are optional extras. Until now, the Resident Evil 4 remake has been relatively free of such monetization.

Capcom also released an update that fixes some technical improvements through. For example, the dead zone of the sticks of Xbox controllers is limited, which should make them more responsive. In addition, the frame rates on the Xbox Series X and S should be improved. According to John Linneman from Digital Foundry, there is ‘a night and day difference’ after correcting the dead zone issues. Another player reports that the dead zone is still not optimal and is still better on the PS5, but the game should now be a lot more playable on the Xbox consoles.

Meanwhile, the remake of Resident Evil 4 is in total sold more than 4 million times. More than a week ago, that figure was more than three million copies sold. That number was already reached two days after the release.
