Researchers at an American university have developed a method to detect hand movements above the device by measuring the influence of the hand on the mobile signal. Until now, this has been done with infrared.

The test smartphone that the researchers used has several antennas on board to measure the reflected signal; the signal reflects on the hand of users. By measuring from which direction the reflection comes, the phone also ‘knows’ where and in which direction the user moves his hand, writes the University of Washington.

The phone automatically emits the radiation to contact cell towers. With the accompanying software, users can then set which actions are associated with which gestures. The technology has been dubbed SideSwipe by researchers at the University of Washington.

SideSwipe resembles a technology that Samsung, among others, uses to operate a phone by swiping above the screen. Samsung uses an infrared transmitter and receiver above the screen for this. That technology debuted on the Galaxy S4 in 2013. The method to operate the phone in this way has received little imitation in the telecom world.
