Sony will release a remastered version of the horror game Until Dawn for the PlayStation 5 and PC this year. The original was released in 2015 exclusively for the PS4. According to Sony, the new version has been rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5.

The game’s remaster will feature ‘new and improved animations’, as well as upgraded characters, environments and effects, promises Sony. The original was developed in the Decima engine, which was created by Guerrilla Games and also used for Horizon: Zero Dawn and Death Stranding, among others, but the remaster is being designed in Unreal Engine 5.

In addition to graphical upgrades, a ‘third-person camera’ has also been added, allowing players to explore ‘enhanced and new locations with new interactions and collectibles’. The publisher says that the game’s story will be retained, but will add ‘unexplored, emotional parts’.

Until Dawn was originally released in 2015 for the PlayStation 4. The game is about a group of teenagers who have to survive an evening in a mountain hut. The players’ choices influence the story; all eight playable characters can die due to wrong choices.

Supermassive Games developed the game and has gone on to work on several other narrative horror games, including The Quarry and the Dark Pictures anthology series titles. The remaster is not being developed by Supermassive Games, but by the new development studio Ballistic Moon. That studio consists of many former Supermassive Games developers. In addition to a remaster, a film based on Until Dawn is also being worked on.
