Reddit wants to acquire Spell platform for machine learning experiments

Reddit wants to acquire Spell, a service to quickly set up experiments with machine learning. Reddit wants to use Spell’s technology to serve users relevant messages, ads and security.

With the takeover makes it to Reddit in its own words an in-house software-as-a-service-based AI platform, with which it is relatively easy to start scalable machine learning experiments. Spell’s technology should help the social platform improve content relevance, organize conversations, adjust ad placement and improve user security.

Employees of spell will be part of Reddit post-acquisition and will help integrate machine learning across the product, advertising and security teams. Spell’s founder and CEO, Serkan Piantino, will become Vice President of the Foundational Product team at Reddit. Piantino is a former Facebook developer who started Spell in 2016. The acquisition amount has not been disclosed.
