Reddit user creates working Pip-Boy 2000 based on a Raspberry Pi
A Reddit user has transformed a replica of a Pip-Boy 2000 from Fallout 76 into a working portable computer. The mod project is controlled with a Raspberry Pi, and includes a holotape reader and a bluetooth speaker that plays Fallout music.
Reddit user Starscream205 shared his project in the Fallout subreddit. A Pip-Boy is a type of portable computer from the Fallout game series. The computer is attached to the player’s arm in-game, after which it can be used for, among other things, reading stats, inventory management and viewing the map.

For the project, Starscream205 used a replica of a Pip-Boy 2000 that the Reddit user had previously purchased. After receiving it, the Reddit user decided to convert the imitation model into a working Pip-Boy, based on a Raspberry Pi. Currently, Starscream205 still uses the standard Raspbian operating system, although he reports that it is also working on its own interface. In addition, the screen is not yet completely finished to your liking, but we are working on that too.
In addition to a working Pip-Boy, Starscream205 continues to work on associated holotapes. These holotapes are used in the Fallout series as a sort of storage medium for everything from documents to video games. Starscream205 is working on its own game, which should eventually become playable on the Pip-Boy from such a holotape. The portable computer also includes a bluetooth speaker, which plays tunes from the Appalachia Radio station from Fallout 76. All buttons and built-in LEDs work properly.
Starscream205 writes that power supply was an obstacle to getting the portable arm computer working. In his own words, the Reddit user eventually decided to use a battery expansion board for the Raspberry Pi, to which a lithium battery is connected. The whole is charged via a micro USB connection.
Currently, this project is still in full swing. Users interested in the mod project can follow its progress on Starscream205’s Reddit page.
