Reddit is discontinuing Clubhouse-like Talk feature
Reddit will shut down Talk on March 21. After this date, the Clubhouse-like feature will no longer be usable. Recent call recordings can be downloaded from that moment until June 1. Reddit Talk is an audio feature that lets users talk to each other in group conversations.
The third party that Reddit for Talk works with is going to stop its audio service. Therefore, it becomes more expensive for Reddit to keep the Talk service online than was foreseen and so Reddit is shutting down Talk for now.
Reddit does say that audio remains important to the platform and says it wants to bring Talk “or another audio product” to the social medium in the future. Before that, however, Reddit first wants to “simpler” the platform and have a better subreddit infrastructure. Like this wants the platform create content-aware feeds, where users can indicate whether they are more interested in text or video at that moment. With the latter feed, users will see a TikTok-like feed, with more gifs and videos.
Talks hosted after September 1 last year will be available for download from March 21 to June 1. Reddit introduced Talk in April 2021 as a competitor for Clubhouse. Around that time, many apps introduced alternatives to Clubhouse, an app that let users track and make audio calls.
