Razer Shows Switch-Like Smartphone Controller With Wider Compatibility

Razer comes again with Switch-like controller for smartphones. Unlike predecessor Junglecat, this new model, the Kishi, should work with most iPhones and Android devices. This predecessor only worked with a handful of phones.

Unlike the Junglecat, the Kishi does not have a connecting piece in the middle to make a whole of the two ‘Joy-Cons’. A case with the controllers on and the phone in is no longer there. Instead, there’s some sort of ribbon cable connection between the two controllers, which slides out to accommodate different smartphone heights. That can be seen in a hands-on from CNet.

Razer worked with Gamevice on the universal fit design of the clamps, but it’s not clear exactly how that works and how the design can handle a variety of sizes. Gamevice’s existing products are also focused on specific devices, such as the Junglecat. In any case, the announcement speaks of 32 different supported smartphones ‘and more devices’.

The connection to the smartphone is via USB-C and a Lightning connection. The Junglecat also supports bluetooth low energy, but the Kishi doesn’t seem to have that. The advantage of a wired connection is the lower latency. Furthermore, there is also a pass-through connection to charge your phone while the controllers are attached to it.

The controllers together have two analog sticks, a d-pad, four face buttons, a home button and two buttons that apparently stand for forward and back. Finally, it also has shoulder buttons: two bumpers and two triggers. The set should be on the market early this year, according to Razer. The company has not announced a price at this time. The Junglecat cost 120 euros at the time.
