Raspberry Pi Pico W gets support for Bluetooth Low Energy

The Raspberry Pi Pico W module will soon receive support for the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol. The BLE connectivity should be available with the release of version 1.5.0 of the Pico C SDK.

The announcement comes from Alasdiar Allan, who provides documentation for the Pi. It has for the addition of the Bluetooth Low Energy support opened an open ticket on GitHub, wherever thirteen other tickets are open. Alan expected that support will be available sometime this month.

The Pico W contains Infineon’s CYW43439 chips which include support for Bluetooth Low Energy, but Raspberry Pi had not yet enabled this connectivity. It was already indicated that this was coming via a software update. Connection to WiFi 4, or WiFi based on the 802.11n protocol, was already possible.

The Raspberry Pi Pico W is built around the Raspberry Pi’s own RP2040 microcontroller, with two Arm Cortex-M0+ cores running at 133MHz. There is 264kB SRAM available. The computing board has been available since June 2022 and costs six dollars.
