Raspberry Pi CEO: Raspberry Pi 5 won’t be released until after 2023

Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton says that the Raspberry Pi 5 will not be released until after 2023 due to the supply problems that will continue for the time being. He calls 2023 a ‘recovery year’ and states that only then will the company start working on the next generation.

Raspberry Pi will need time next year to recover from recent supply issues, Upton told the YouTube channel ExplainingComputers. The corona pandemic and subsequent shortages of raw materials and production facilities have disrupted the company’s rhythm, making the Raspberry Pi 4 the brand’s longest-running generation of single-board computers. That generation came onto the market in the summer of 2019 and has existed roughly as long as the Raspberry Pi 3 and 3+ combined. In any case, there will be another year on top of that.

“You know what would be a disaster? If we try to release the Raspberry Pi 5 and can’t scale production in a timely manner due to limitations. Or if we release the Raspberry Pi 5 and disrupt the supply chains for other [Raspberry Pi’s] disruption,” says Upton. He speaks of ‘cannibalizing’ existing product lines if current generations are released too early. “It’s not just about chip shortages. Some supply chain issues concern packaging, testing capabilities or substrates.”
