Raspberry Pi CEO: Raspberry Pi 5 will not be released until after 2023
Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton says that the Raspberry Pi 5 will only be released after 2023 due to the supply problems that will continue for the time being. He calls 2023 a ‘recovery year’ and states that the company will only start working on a next generation after that.

Raspberry Pi will need time next year to recover from recent supply problems, Upton tells YouTube channel Explaining Computers. The corona pandemic and subsequent shortages of raw materials and production facilities have disrupted the company’s “rhythm”, making the Raspberry Pi 4 the brand’s longest-running generation of single-board computers. That generation came on the market in the summer of 2019 and has been around for roughly as long as the Raspberry Pi 3 and 3+ combined. In any case, there will be another year on top of that.
“You know what would be a disaster? If we try to release the Raspberry Pi 5 and we can’t scale production in a timely manner because of constraints. Or if we release the Raspberry Pi 5 and with it the supply chains for other [Raspberry Pi’s] disrupt,” said Upton. He speaks of the “cannibalization” of existing product lines with the early release of current generations. “It’s not just about chip shortages. Some supply chain issues involve packaging, testing capabilities or substrates.”
