Rabobank has announced that the bank will stop using MiniTix on 1 November. From then on it is no longer possible to make payments with the electronic payment system. This definitively puts an end to a twelve-year-old system.

Rabobank introduced MiniTix in 2003 for making small payments via the internet or a mobile phone. The system was actually a virtual wallet with which amounts of up to 150 euros could be transferred. The wallet was linked to the 06 number, so that, for example, someone could be paid with a text message.

Rabobank says it wants to stop using MiniTix, because in addition to traditional debit card payments, contactless payment now offers customers an easy and safe payment method. “Now that contactless payment is becoming the new standard, other payment facilities are being phased out,” the bank said.

The bank therefore advises MiniTix customers to switch to contactless payment. Rabobank will close the wallets of existing customers between 15 and 30 June. They get their money back into their accounts. From November 1, it will no longer be possible to pay with MiniTix at all.

With the discontinuation of MiniTix, the payment service will come to an end. Rabobank started the payment service twelve years ago, because the bank expected the market for micropayments to grow in the following years. In September it became clear that Rabobank was going to stop using MiniTix – also known as ‘online chipping’ – in favor of contactless payments.
