Quest 3 update should reduce passthrough distortion
Meta has released a Quest 3 update that should reduce distortions when using passthrough mode. In previous versions, users saw the image around their hands distort; this should be less after the v66 update.
Meta says it has improved the passthrough with recent updates, but speaks with the v66 version about a 'major update' that should 'significantly' improve the mixed reality experience. In addition to counteracting the distortions, hands 'and other objects' should appear more natural in passthrough mode. The virtual hands should also correspond better to the user's real hands, so that, for example, using virtual menus with hands should be more pleasant in mixed reality.
Meta does say that the passthrough improvements are being rolled out to users gradually and that installing the v66 update doesn't necessarily mean you've gotten the passthrough improvements. It's not clear whether users will be able to see for themselves whether they've received the passthrough improvements beyond using the feature.
In addition to the passthrough improvements, Meta brings wrist buttons to the Quest 3. Pressing a wrist button allows users to open or close menus. Meta talks about an experimental feature that can be turned on or off in the settings menu.
Furthermore, the v66 update introduces background audio, allowing users, for example, to continue playing the sound from the browser, music player or video player even when the app is minimized. Previously, when minimizing the app, the audio or video would pause.
