Qualcomm’s new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner can scan two fingers at once
Qualcomm has announced a new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner that can be placed behind screens. The new version is called 3D Sonic Max and can scan a much larger area, allowing two fingers to be scanned at the same time.
According to Qualcomm, the surface on which users can lay their fingers is 17 times larger than is currently the case with smartphones that use the manufacturer’s ultrasonic technology. It would be a surface of 20mm by 30mm. Qualcomm’s current ultrasonic scanner, which is used in the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 devices, among others, has dimensions of 4mm by 9mm.
The larger surface should make unlocking smartphones easier and would also improve speed and accuracy. It also offers the possibility to increase security by using two fingerprints instead of one. The technology will probably end up in high-end smartphones next year. According to Qualcomm, the technology will also be used in cars and medical equipment.
