Qualcomm is working on processors intended for internet-of-things applications. For example, the manufacturer wants to release a processor for security cameras next year, which should be able to distinguish a pet from a burglar in the image.

The advanced image recognition should distinguish the Qualcomm processor from the competition and with this the American processor designer wants to get a foot in the door in the Internet-of-things market, reports tech site Recode.

As a basis, Qualcomm uses its Snapdragon 618-soc for smartphones, to be able to put more computing power and a 4G modem in a security camera. The first processor in the new line should appear in the first half of 2016. Whether manufacturers will also use them is unknown.

A few years ago, the processor designer presented a soc for use in cars, the Snapdragon 602A. Due to a lack of demand, it was never released and there is no car with a Qualcomm soc in it. Qualcomm is under pressure after Samsung opted for its own Exynos soc with the Galaxy S6. The company has had to lay off many people this year. The company has been focusing on the Internet of Things for some time, including two WiFi chips.
