Qualcomm has announced a new soc for midrange smartphones. The Snapdragon 675 offers support for three cameras and is the direct successor of the Snapdragon 670. The company produces the new soc at 11nm, while the predecessor was still at 10nm.

The Snapdragon 675 has a total of eight processor cores, which are referred to as the Kryo 460 microarchitecture, according to Qualcomm. It is a relatively new architecture that mainly revolves around the use of two fast Cortex A76 cores that run at 2.0Ghz. These are assisted by six more economical A55 cores with a speed of 1.8Ghz. These six economical cores are clocked slightly higher than the Snapdragon 670.

Compared to the Snapdragon 670, the new soc should lead to apps that start 15 percent faster and up to 35 percent performance gain for internet browsing, according to Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 675 will probably also be slightly faster than the higher-ranking Snapdragon 710.

With the Snapdragon 675, Qualcomm is probably responding to the development that high-end features are not only found in the most expensive flagship phones. For example, the image signal processor of the new soc has support for three cameras.

Furthermore, ‘gaming enhancements’ are built in. It is not clear what exactly that means. There is also support for Quick Charge 4+ and improved AI support. The latter should, for example, lead to a faster face unlock.
