Thirty devices will be released this year with a 5G chip from Qualcomm. Most of them are smartphones, the American company says. The rest are suspected hot spots. The devices will be available in the coming months.

In addition to the soc and modem, Qualcomm also supplies designs for the antenna part of 5g smartphones, allowing manufacturers to make a 5g smartphone fairly easily. Most of the 30 upcoming devices are smartphones, Qualcomm claims.

Those smartphones have a Snapdragon 855-soc on board, with the optional X50 modem for 5g connectivity. The standard X24 modem of the Snapdragon 855 only offers the possibility to connect to 4G networks. Because it is a separate modem, the power consumption will probably be higher.

The American company also believes that these are the vast majority of 5G devices that will appear this year. Other mobile chip manufacturers have also announced 5g variants. It is in line with expectations that Huawei, among others, will come up with devices based on its own chips that support 5G.

There will be no large 5G network in the Benelux in 2019. In various other countries, providers already want to start with 5g, including the US, the United Kingdom and South Korea. In the first instance, it concerns networks on high frequencies such as 28GHz and only later on the lower frequencies below 6GHz. The current 4G runs at 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2.6GHz in the Benelux.
