Qualcomm releases Snapdragon Game Super Resolution upscaling tool for phones
Qualcomm has shown off the Snapdragon Game Super Resolution mobile upscaling tool. With this, the developer promises higher frame rates and resolutions for mobile games. This should also allow the phone’s battery to last longer.
According to Qualcomm 1080p games can be displayed in 4K with the Game Super Resolution tool, and 30fps can be increased to 60fps with the technology. The manufacturer promises ‘twice the performance improvements’ compared to other mobile upscaling tools.
Users can choose from four different options. They can choose to increase the resolutions while keeping the visual quality of the graphics the same, or increase the visual quality of the graphics but keep the framerate the same. In addition, it is possible to increase the frame rate while the resolutions and visual quality remain the same, or ‘just’ the power consumption is reduced so that the battery can last longer.
This tool is able to render the upscaled images in one go, rather than in increments of two like AMD’s competing FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0 tool, and is therefore said to deliver faster performance and consume less power. Game Super Resolution is “optimized” for the Snapdragon Adreno GPUs, but should nevertheless work with “most” mobile GPUs, Qualcomm claims.
Mobile games must themselves support the upscaling technique. Qualcomm mentions Call of Duty Warzone Mobile, Farming Simulator 23 Mobile and Jade Dynasty, among others, as games that will support this tool. Game Super Resolution should be available later this year.
