Qualcomm releases Snapdragon 636 with support for 18:9 screens
Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 636-soc. It is an update of the existing Snapdragon 630 with some changes. For example, the screen and camera can have a higher resolution and the soc contains a new gpu.
The Snapdragon 636 has an Adreno 509 GPU, compared to the Adreno 508 of the Snapdragon 630. This also includes support for screens with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels, where the 630 officially supports 1920×1200 pixels as maximum resolution. The maximum resolution for cameras goes from 24/13 to 24/16 megapixels.
In addition, Qualcomm has exchanged the Cortex A53 cores of the 630 for its ‘own’ Kryo 260 cores. This involves eight CPU cores with a maximum clock speed of 1.8GHz. The Kryo 260 bears the name of Qualcomm, but it is presumably a modified version of Cortex A53 cores.
With the 636, Qualcomm has a successor for the 630 ready, because Qualcomm announced that soc this spring. The chip designer says the two socs are ‘pin-compatible’, so manufacturers don’t have to change anything in their design to use the 636 instead of the 630 or 660. Manufacturers will be able to use the 636 from November.
