Qualcomm is close to a solution with China over alleged monopoly position
Qualcomm is currently in talks with China to settle the alleged monopoly position. The Wall Street Journal reported this on Friday evening. Qualcomm could face a multimillion-dollar fine.
Representatives of the Chinese competition authority are said to have discussed the dispute with the Qualcomm board last Thursday. It emerged that the American company wants to reach a settlement with the Chinese government, reports The Wall Street Journal. More details are not yet available, because Qualcomm does not want to get ahead of things.
China’s “Development and Reform Commission” launched the investigation in November over allegations that Qualcomm overcharged for licenses. In June, China concluded that Qualcomm may have a monopoly on mobile technologies.
The American processor maker has a leading position in the market for SOCs in smartphones. Qualcomm has competition from Samsung and Apple, among others, and manufacturers such as the Taiwanese MediaTek and the Chinese Rockchip.
