Qualcomm expects smartphone deliveries to drop 30 percent due to the corona crisis
Qualcomm expects that due to the consequences of the corona crisis, the number of smartphones delivered in the second quarter of 2020 will be 30 percent lower than previously forecast. In the past quarter, it was a drop of 21 percent, according to the manufacturer.
Qualcomm mentions the figures when presenting its quarterly figures. According to the manufacturer, these have been negatively influenced by a decline in demand for smartphones. For the past quarter, this was a drop of 21 percent compared to previous expectations.
The effects of the corona crisis will become even more apparent in the next quarter, according to Qualcomm. The chipmaker thinks that deliveries of smartphones will decrease by 30 percent. The company does note that the circumstances are ‘very uncertain’ due to the corona crisis.
Despite the corona crisis, Qualcomm is not adjusting its expectations for the number of 5G smartphones that will be delivered in 2020. The chipmaker thinks this number will be between 175 and 225 million. That is a relatively small share of the entire smartphone market. It is estimated that a total of 1.37 billion smartphones were shipped last year.
Qualcomm posted quarterly revenue of $5.2 billion, up 5 percent from last year. Profits came in at $468 million, which is 29 percent lower than in the comparable period a year ago.
