Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 660 and 630-socs
The American processor designer Qualcomm has presented its socs Snapdragon 660 and 630. Where the 630 is the successor to the popular Snapdragon 625, the 660 should follow the less used 652 and 653.
The Snapdragon 660 is the first midrange soc in which Qualcomm uses the self-designed Kryo cores. The 660 has four ‘Kryo 260’ cores at 2.2GHz and four smaller and more fuel-efficient ‘Kryo 260’ cores at 1.8GHz. Compared to previous socs, the 660 supports up to 8GB lpddr4 memory and ufs storage, while the 4g modem has been upgraded to an X12 chip with support for download speeds of up to 600Mbit/s.
The 630 is a midrange soc with eight Cortex A53 cores from ARM. The lpddr4 memory in the 630 can go up to 1333MHz, compared to 1866MHz in the Snapdragon 660. The 630 also has the X12 chip for 4g connectivity. Qualcomm has both socs manufactured at 14nm. Samsung produces the socs on its lpp FinFet process.
The Snapdragon 660 is already with manufacturers and should appear in smartphones within two months, while the 630 should be in devices shortly afterwards. Both socs are pin-compatible with predecessors, so manufacturers should have little trouble putting the new socs in devices that have been in development for some time.
