QuakeCon 2021 program hints at updated version of Quake

The program for QuakeCon 2021 temporarily referred to the arrival of a ‘revitalized edition’ of Quake. Presumably a kind of updated version of Quake will be shown during the event.

Quake’s Back heralded the QuakeCon 2021 program, detailing a Quake presentation taking place at this fair. This presentation will be held on Friday, August 20 in honor of the game’s twenty-fifth anniversary. Jerk Gustafsson of MachineGames and John Linneman of Digital Foundry will discuss, among other things, the history of Quake during the panel.

“The pair will also discuss the additional content that MachineGames has contributed to this revitalized edition,” the panel’s synopsis read. Although the arrival has not yet been officially confirmed, it seems that the studio will release a new Quake version next week. The reference to a ‘revitalized edition’ of Quake was noticed by Xbox Era and was removed by the organization of QuakeCon minutes after publication.

On Thursday, August 19, MachineGames and id Software will also hold a panel on Quake, right after the opening ceremony of QuakeCon 2021. It is likely that id Software will also be involved in this eventual revitalized edition of Quake. That wouldn’t be surprising since id Software is the original studio behind the Quake franchise. Id Software and MachineGames also collaborate more often; the latter, for example, now makes games in the Wolfenstein franchise, which also originally comes from id Software.
