QNAP and Canonical Optimize Ubuntu on Nas Systems for Iot

QNAP and Canonical announce a close collaboration to enable Ubuntu on NAS systems for Internet-of-things applications. Ubuntu would be better integrated into QNAP’s NAS operating system, QTS, for this.

With their collaboration, QNAP and Canonical want to provide a nas platform on which Internet-of-things applications run, both at home and in small and medium-sized businesses as well as for the enterprise market. QNAP’s QTS operating system includes an integrated virtualization platform, and it should get better support for Ubuntu through the collaboration.

The companies are encouraging developers to create not only applications for QNAP’s QTS App Center, but also programs in the universal snap packaging format that Ubuntu can use. The advantage of snap is that developers can quickly and easily distribute and update applications. Snaps were initially dedicated to Ubuntu Core, an operating system aimed at iot devices, but Ubuntu 16.04 LTS also supports them.

QNAP and Canonical point out that Linux Station v1.1.893 is available in the QTS App Center and has full support for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, thus making the snap format usable on QNAP nas systems.
