PureOS, the operating system of the Librem laptops and smartphone, can run the same apps on laptops and smartphones. The company behind the operating system, Purism, announced this on Wednesday.

It’s possible, because it’s background apps for Gnome, Purism says. The company has been working on a way to make apps adapt to screen size. The apps are often already suitable for running on different processor architectures, so that is not an obstacle.

The move should make it easier for developers to create apps for PureOS and run them in one go on laptops and smartphones without much code changes. The interface ideas that Purism offers are very similar to those used for website design.

The proprietary apps are also universal. Purism modifies the browser, among other things, by moving the interface control buttons to the bottom of the screen when shrinking the window. The Librem laptops are already out, the Librem 5 smartphone should appear later this year.
