Punkt makes ‘dumbphone’ with 4g support
The Swiss Punkt announces the MP02, a phone with 2″ LCD that is only suitable for basic functions such as calling and texting, but does support 4G. It is the successor of the MP01, which only worked on 2G networks.
Under the hood, the Punkt MP02 is in fact a smartphone, the device has a Snapdragon 210-soc, 2GB ram, 16GB emmc flash memory and runs on Android 8.1. However, the software has been modified in such a way that only basic functions are available. In addition, the device has a transflective LCD, which does not display colors, but is easy to read in the sun because it also reflects light. The screen has a resolution of 320×240 pixels.
Punkt provides the MP02 with BlackBerry encryption and also new is the possibility to display messages in a thread on the phone. In addition to calling and texting, it is possible to make notes on the phone, there is a clock with functions such as an alarm clock, alarm and stopwatch, as well as a calculator and a calendar. The device can also be used as a WiFi hotspot.
The dimensions of the MP02 are 117x51x14.4mm, the device weighs 100 grams. The housing is made of plastic and the phone is splash-proof. There is room for one nano SIM card and the battery with a capacity of 1280 mAh is good for a standby time of twelve days or more than four hours of calling, according to the manufacturer.
Punkt previously released the comparable MP01, which only works on 2g. Some providers are now starting to disable 2G networks, for example AT&T did in the US. Punkt sells the MP02 for 329 euros.
